Award winning Cloud Accounting Specialist
Debra Anderson is an accountant, tax agent and one of Australia’s leading MYOB Certified Consultants.
As a thought-leader in the accounting and bookkeeping industry she is a sought after writer, speaker and industry advisor. She has over 20 years’ experience working with businesses of all shapes, sizes and industries. Along with the usual accounting and tax qualifications she also has an MBA and sits on advisory boards of organisations including the Australian Tax Office and MYOB.
In 2006 Debra began what was then called Legally BAS because it was obvious to her that the majority of tax agents and business owners don’t speak the same language nor do they understand each other’s wants and needs. She felt that traditional accountants spoke ‘at’ their clients and because the client doesn’t want to appear stupid they often go along with what they are told but have no idea what it actually means. Too many accountants and tax agents are of the opinion that business software such as MYOB is there for them to prepare BAS and tax returns and although it is a tool they can use it is Debra’s firm opinion that this is the secondary purpose of business software. The primary purpose of software being to enable the business owner to manage and understand the business – obvious to you and me but not so obvious to many traditionalists.
Debra is far from a traditionalist. She has received countless accolades for her work in this new world commonly referred to as cloud computing and was the Inaugural winner of MYOB’s Innovation Award. She works closely with the Australian Taxation Office on several of their advisory boards and is heavily involved with their Reinventing the ATO project which is focused on contemporising the Australian tax system and culture. Debra was also part of the ATO Fix-it Squad which was mandated to simplify the BAS process for small businesses.
Debra’s areas of expertise include the setup, check-up and clean-up of MYOB cloud accounting systems, small business advisory and small business taxation. Her passion is without a doubt small business.
Debra’s first book with practical advice for small business owners on all the financial aspects of their business from business structure right through to putting together a budget and understanding the financial reports is due for release later this year – keep your eyes open for it.
